13.06.2014

Consul General from Consulate of the Republic of Bulgaria in Nis, Mr. Atanas Krstin, based on interviews and previously established agreements with Municipality of Palilula, and the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments of Niš, informed the president of municipality, at the beginning of the year, about the idea of the Bulgarian Embassy in Serbia to set up a new marble plate in place of damaged-existing plate at the memorial of perished Bulgarian soldiers in the Second World War, in the settlement of Ledena Stena.

After these preparations, a new commemorative plate is placed on 13 June 2014 at this memorial, in the presence of Consul General Consulate of the Republic of Bulgaria in Nis, Mr. Atanas Krstin, and president of City Municipality of Palilula, Boban Dzunic.

On the territory of Palilula-Nis, among the many monuments an important place occupies memorial charnel house, built in 1948, where there were about 2500 of Bulgarian Armed Forces buried,  fallen in the final part of the fight against the German occupying forces in the former Yugoslavia. After the war, they collected the remains of these soldiers. This is the second Bulgarian army, which, after 1944, when they interrupted a pact with Germany, joined the anti-Hitler coalition and joined the fight against the Germans, under the Army commanded by Alexander Stojčev. Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments of Niš, with the support of the city and Municipality of Palilula, in 2005 made the project of restoration and conservation of the memorial. Some of the works have already been carried out during that period on the basis of inter-state agreement and in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Bulgaria (reconstruction of the roof structure, insulation leakage, insulation machines, sidewalks, reconstruction of facades).

Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Serbia determined other necessary resources for the completion of works. The works will be completed in the first half of 2009 and in a symbolic way, senior representatives of Bulgaria and Serbia, in this park, planted a tree of peace and friendship. Restoration of the crypt is not fully completed, and the necessary cordon off the area will carry out restoration works of the mosaic that is practically gone. Those restoration works were discussed many times.
